The 28th annual Deer Creek Conservation District/Imation Outdoor Classroom has been set for Thursday, April 22 in Weatherford.

Fourth grade students from Weatherford and the surrounding area are planning to attend.

Students will visit stations throughout the day-long, hands-on event. Sessions will cover subject areas such as grasses, water, trees, soils, wildlife, Web of Life, Quick Frozen Critters and more.

The Outdoor Classroom began in the early 1980s as a way to show children how we all depend on renewable natural resources for survival, and how their use and ecological care determine their fate.

The first years of the DCCD Outdoor Classroom were held on a district director’s farm. In the late 1980s, the district reached an agreement with the 3M Corporation. The company dedicated four acres of wooded area on their property to be used for the classroom.

The classroom was one of the first in the state and among the first to have a partnership with an industry. The early event featured five or six stations, mostly covering topics of water, soils, grasses and trees.

The Outdoor Classroom is used to teach conservation education, history, geology and composition. The history of Oklahoma and the importance of conservation are made a part of the lesson plan.

The classroom helps reinforce essential environmental generalizations such as all living things, inlcuding people, are interdependent upon one another and with their environment, and natural resources undergo continuous change as nothing in the world remains static.

The Outdoor Classroom also helps to promote DCCD, awareness of the importance of conservation and the district’s conservation efforts, with the help of everyone associated with the yearly event.

By observing, classifying, measuring, analyzing and interpreting, the students gain essential learning skills as well as an idea of their own relation to the natural world. As they aquire knowledge and understanding from and about the environment, they also develop some competence in evaluating alternatives for using and managing resources.
